5 Keys to Successful Evangelism
Churches grow when there is a genuine spiritual revival among the members and a corresponding renewal of spiritual life.

The New Testament Christian church grew largely because each member experienced a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. The book of Acts testifies to the dynamic power of God working through converted believers. Notice how these clear passages reveal Christ’s promise of spiritual revival and its dramatic effect on the lives of the disciples:

Acts 1:8 - “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me.

Acts 4:20 - “For we cannot but speak the things we have seen and heard.” (The testimony of the disciples was from the depths of their personal experiences.)

Acts 4:31 - “when they prayed the place was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”

Acts 4:33 - “And with great power the disciples gave witness of the resurrection.”

The Apostle John describes these spirit-filled disciples and the power of their witness this way,

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled concerning the word of life, the life was manifested and we have seen and bear witness and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us - that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with HIs Son Jesus Christ.”
1 John 1:1-3
  • The disciples shared a Christ they knew
  • They proclaimed a Christ whom they experienced
  • They witnessed of a Christ who changed them personally
On the Day of Pentecost the disciples experienced spiritual revival. (See Acts 2:1-4)

The newly-converted disciples, filled with the Spirit, had hearts overflowing with the desire to proclaim His love to everyone they met. When we have an experience with Jesus, we too will have a desire to share Him.
“No sooner does one come to Christ than there is born in his heart a desire to make known to others what a precious friend he has found in Jesus, the saving and sanctifying truth cannot be shut up in his heart.”
Steps to Christ, p. 78
There is a great need for revival among God’s people. God longs to give us His Holy Spirit. He is waiting for us to accept it.

  1. Churches are revived when there is a renewed emphasis on Bible study
  2. “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
    II Peter 1:2-4
“There is nothing more calculated to strengthen the intellect than the study of the Scriptures. No other book is so potent to elevate the thoughts, to give vigor to the faculties, as the broad ennobling truths of the Bible.”
    Steps to Christ, p. 90
  3. Churches are revived when there is a renewed emphasis on Intercessory Prayer
  4. Paul prayed for the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who were in Colosse. You can see Paul’s example of intercession in the following passages.

“We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you . . . For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
    Colossians 1:3, 9
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.
    Philippians 1:3-5
“There is necessity for diligence in prayer; let nothing hinder you. Make every effort to keep open the communion between Jesus and your own soul.”
    Steps to Christ, p. 98
  5. Churches are revived when there is a renewed emphasis on witnessing.
  6. As the disciples shared their faith, it grew. As they testified of their personal commitment to Christ, they became powerful proclaimers. The more we give, the more we will receive.

“If you will go to work as Christ designs that His disciples shall, and win souls for Him, you will feel the need of a deeper experience and a greater knowledge in divine things, and will hunger and thirst after righteousness.”
    Steps to Christ, p. 80
After a person has spent time with Jesus and is spiritually renewed the heart’s desire is to be trained and equipped for service.
